[DeTomaso] 10 qt oil pan capacity

Why not stick a stock factory 5 qt tube and stick into your engine and fill to full mark, recording how many quarts it takes?? Or are we trying to improve Ford's better idea? Rumor also has it that Ford had you put 6 qts into a 5qt pan on some HO type 351C engines.

" I was passing another car at the time "

Bet they've got a story to tell now.

But the only apples to apples comparison would be the capacity at a known level
below the pan rail.  I'd run the experiment myself, but I don't have a spare
stock pan nor a 10qt pan:  Put 5 qts in the stock pan with the pan rail surface
level, measure how far below that surface the level of the fluid is.  Fill the
"10qt" pan to that same level, measure how much that takes.

Or keep the discussion going on and on.

It worked fine.  I had perfectly good oil pressure and temperature
indications for the first hour or so of the drive.  I never got above 2500 rpm,
as

we were just plonking along a twisty road and looking at the stars.  At
2000-2500 rpm, the oil pump was turning slowly enough that the low amount of
oil would continue to feed it.  But when I romped on it for the first time
that night, the engine (and the pump) sped up, and sucked the pan dry,
starving the bearings (I'm guessing).

The total time from flooring the pedal to bangbangbangBANGBANGBANG was
about three or four seconds, and I was passing another car at the time, so
paying attention to what was happening outside the windshield, not the oil
pressure gauge.

Mike (still bummed...)
