[DeTomaso] NPC Trouble Shooting and Compression Test Question

Sometimes it is difficult to see the bluish tint.
You can usually pull the plugs and see what is leaking. If it is sucking
water, the plug should be really clean (I think). If it is sucking oil,
there should be oil on the plug. If it is really rich, it will be black.
Normal is grayish or white. White means it is lean.

Funny you ask that....I asked the boys that and they had no idea. I didn't
see it. I would have smelled the burning oil.

Oil smoke has a bluish cast, whereas water or antifreeze is basically white,
like the steam it is.
which was the car blowing?

My best guess- First, they cannot do a compression TEST without pushrods
ut they CAN do a compression leak-down test which does not depend on turning
he engine over.
econd, it's common to do a valve job on a well worn engine and immediately
n firing it, break the old rings from the suddenly higher compression. Oil
moke will pour out. I learned this the hard way on a Falcon engine and
ater a Chev V-8 eons ago. Engines usually cannot be piecemeal-overhauled
with
ny hope of success even if you're poor, but they'll find out what's really
rong with their leak-down test. Good luck to your neighbors, Tom- J Deryke
