Oil smoke has a bluish cast, whereas water or antifreeze is basically white, like the steam it is.

which was the car blowing?

My best guess- First, they cannot do a compression TEST without pushrods 
ut they CAN do a compression leak-down test which does not depend on turning 
he engine over. 
econd, it's common to do a valve job on a well worn engine and immediately 
n firing it, break the old rings from the suddenly higher compression. Oil 
moke will pour out. I learned this the hard way on a Falcon engine and 
ater a Chev V-8 eons ago. Engines usually cannot be piecemeal-overhauled with 
ny hope of success even if you're poor, but they'll find out what's really
