Vintage Ferraris are referred to in a similar fashion...the year of the car is the date it was built.

A November '76 production date would be considered a 1976 car...seems as if the Detomaso system is similar.

That's simply not true--in fact it's utter BS.   It's bad to spread that 
sort of thing without researching it.

The first 1973 Pantera was THPNMS04840, manufactured in November 1972.  
4839 was a 1972 Pantera and was also manufactured in November.   The 
distinction was completely arbitrary between model years, but there IS a very clearly 
documented distinction, and it happened sometime in November, not July.
