Hi Charlie
 
Before mine was modified the original set up had both ports on a straight  
piece of pipe coming off the compressor. Yours being a very early 5S  could  
be different. 
 
2) they can be reached  from in the engine bay and should be  visible.
 
3) you cannot mix  R12 with R134a  mine is running the latter and  has 650  
grammes in it
