I have had poor luck with the "fail-safe" brand.  Oh, they do fail open (almost immediately) but I'd rather have a working part.

Before you get into the big work, I would make sure the new thermostat is
working properly. I try to use only quality Robertshaw stats and have found
them to fail right out of the box too.
