[DeTomaso] Raise of hands... how many of you...

Dear Curt,

I, too, looked at the selection of the Mustang R wheels from AFR
and IIRC, you are right regarding the 17x8 and 17x10.5. The 17x8 had
nearly correct backspace for the Pantera and the 10.5 was close, but needed
a bit of a spacer. That is how I remember it, too.

                          Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

MIke...

Years ago I thought I wanted the Mustang R Wheels. I found that a company
named AFS Wheels in SoCal had some that might have fit OK? The wheels I was
looking at from them were 17x8 and 17x10.5 The 8s had a BS of 5.25 and the
10.5's BS were 6.63 and would have needed a small spacer of about
3/16"-1/4"? to make the back look right? They did make a 17x9 wheel but the
BS was way off for the front and the back! I think Hall sold some Mustang R
Wheels (17x9"?) at one time but I think you needed a Big spacer for the
back, something like maybe 1"? I don't think I'd want that large of a space
on my Car!

Good Luck
Curt

Years ago, Patrick Hals bought a set of Mustang Cobra 17x9 wheels for a
narrowbody Pantera he had, and had them sent to me for me to forward to him.
They had been mounted on a Pantera in the past, but the owner had removed
them to exchange them for something else.

I put them on my car and found they were a terrible fit.   They seemed much
too wide in the front, and a bit too narrow in the rear.   I don't see any
way they would have worked in the front, and you'd probably want to use
thick spacers in the rear to have them fit properly, which is a very dubious
practice.   I convinced him to abandon the idea, and I've been trying
off-and-on to sell them to a Mustang owner ever since, with no luck.

Mustang-style wheels can be had with the proper widths and offsets, and I
had hoped that this is what you had bought.   But standard Mustang Cobra
17x9 wheels really won't work on an unflared Pantera--at least I don't think
so.

Steve Roverino's Pantera was featured in the 2008 No. 2 POCA Profiles, and
runs Mustang-style wheels (17x9 and 17x10.5) from AF wheels; he uses 245/40
front and 335/35 rear tires.   I don't think the front wheels are the
standard offset though.   You might want to speak to him and find out
more?   He mentions in the article that he was thinking of replacing them,
so maybe they didn't work as well as he would have hoped?
