David,
I did this very job a few years ago. In my case it was much hard to get
the little bits and pieces of the old one out, which had rusted to paper
thing but still stubborn.
If I recall, I filed a chamfer on the leading edge first. The tube gets
pressed in about a half to three-quarters of an inch. I used Copper
Coat gasket sealer on it and hammered it in. Note, I can't remember for
certain, but I probably used a deep socket over the tube to protect the
edge and I used a dead-blow hammer to drive it in.
You can see photos of the process here:

It wasn't easy to swing, which is why I used the dead blow hammer,
because it gave just enough assist in the process.
For what it's worth, I just did this job again today on an engine I have
on a stand. I again used the socket to protect the tube an the dead
blow hammer to make it easy to drive.

I'm looking for a better idea than the one I have as there is no room to swing a hammer and the interference fit is pretty darn tight. My best idea is to turn down the tube a little into I can slide it in and use jb weld to seal it in place.
