[DeTomaso] 265/50-15 tires

Dear Dennis, Jack, Garth and Mike,


           I also repeated Dennis Sanford's field test of mixing tires when
the common H rated 305-50-15 Euro TAs by BFG went away.  I needed some tires
for the ten inch campys and could NOT find anything to replace nor duplicate
the H rated Euros.  I ended up with some tire with 295-50-15 size and an S/T
rating.

           The handling became very bad just as Dennis says.  To have a
modicum of stability on curves and turns I had to pump up the rear tires to
stiffen the side walls with pressures of 45 psi. That improved things to
only a fraction of the proper tires performance.  

            I finished the road trip rally and sold the Campys and converted
to seventeens.  I agree with Dennis that mixing stiff good tires on the
front and wimpy woobley tires on the rear of a Pantera is a bad combination
and seriously degrades the handling that you would like to have with a
Pantera.

The speed ratings on tires has to do with the stiffness of the sidewall of
the tire.  That's why when I mixed high speed rated front tires with "S"
speed rated rears I nearly got myself killed in normal highway driving at
normal highway speeds.  The car was almost undriveable, you could not go
into any kind of a curve in the road without the back trying to slide out
past the turn.

"S" speed rating = 112 mph max sustained (30 min. test) "H" speed rating =
130 mph max sustained (30 min test)

That may mean that's all the mfgr decided to ask they be tested to, or....
