What is the best additive to help low compression in a wore out motor? Can't hurt it. Have 90psi on two holes and 110psi on the others. Runs rough at idle but ok above idle. Want to put as many miles on it as possible before trashing it.

Dear Collective,

I'm about to install a quad headlight kit (Kirk's) and have questions about
my buckets. When I replaced my headlight motor, I removed my driver-side
bucket for easier access and noticed HUGE slop in the adjustment. I mean
these holes were butchered by the previous owner and he even installed
bolts with nuts rather than just tap out the receiving end on the bucket
mount plate. Not realizing that was not correct, I just put it together the
same way and had a difficult time adjusting the bucket to close right. This
time, I tapped out the holes and drilled pilot holes to help with the
alignment.

My question is, even centered, the buckets do not fit cleanly in my fender
when lights are closed. There is still a noticeable gap on both sides. Any
tricks to make it less noticeable?

Rob

OK, not really that new, I found it four or five years ago and have
been keeping it a secret hoping the owner would sell it to me, I have
asked every 6 months, unknown to me, he sold it to another person who
knew me about 4 months after I last asked ( for a $1,000 more than I
offered.... %$#@$%).

So there is now a "public" discovery to announce.

It belonged to the local Ford Dealer's son when he went to college, he
drove it for 2 years in 1974 and 1975 and parked it, it has remained
indoors in a climate controlled garage since then. It is NPSO7241, a
1974 in YELLOW. It had never been titled until two months ago, it has
24K miles on it.

Sounds great, yet this was an unloved storage, the brakes were gone,
the m?c was gone, the clutch was gone, the tires are dry rotted. The
doors are full of dings from being parked on a college campus in the
70's. The new owner has redone the brakes, recovered the inside front
boot and tub, fixed the m?c and installed a new intake and carb,
wires, oil change and other misc stuff.

It has the original steering wheel in excellent shape ( first one I
have ever seen , still fugly )

I had the opportunity to drive it just now.....

Interesting experience, tight steering rack ( felt really nice ), sits
high up compared to mine, and rides like a sedan compared to mine. I
liked the flat top of the new dash dash, although t honestly I like my
two pods better else where, the molded dash versus a covered dash
looks more "common", but the flat dash surface below the window in
sorta cool.

It needs tires, it needs a paint job, the seats are like new. I
seriously doubt that nothing over 105lbs has ever sat in the right
seat since new. The carpet is original, grey felt looking stuff in
good shape.

It shifts nice, although the clutch compared to mine is like a small
modern car, long throw and soft to engage, yet crisp once there.

I will intro the owner to the forum in the days to come, photos will
be posted on Monday,

Michael Shortt

I told the owner that a serious restoration type person might offer
him a new Momo for the like new Capri steering wheel, so if that's
you, hit me up with an email and I'll share.

Corey, good, cheap Porsche shops are as rare as good, cheap 351-C shops.
There are lots that are good OR cheap but not both. Both are tricky engines to
deal with in detail. A good shop is Pelican Parts in the San Luis Obispo
area, and POCA President Les Gray has experience with Porsches, too.

During overhaul, a few modifications from stock to the engine may be in
order. For one thing, the flat-6 Porsche has always been an interference
engine, and has used at least 12 different variations of an automatic cam-chain
tensioner over the decades. Arguably the best is still the racer's favorite-
clamping the thing solid and checking/adjusting it manually for wear now &
then. Good luck- J DeRyke

There is an interesting letter in the newest Hemming's Sports & Exotic
magazine ( Sept 2012 ) that arrived last night.
It basically states what has been said here, the reason that Boxsters
do not hold their value is the high cost of repair and disposable
engines with cheap internals ( the water pump impeller for instance is
plastic ). The gist of the aricle is, drive the hell out of it until
it breaks and then get another one if you like it that much.

I sure still miss my old 911 SC Targa, it was built when Porsche's
were still built with pride.

First, check to see if in fact your buckets are the serialized ones for
that car. If so they will have the actual s/n stamped in the bottom of the
buckets (cannot be seen unless removed). Replacement buckets may not fit well no

matter what you do as, there were at least two different buckets.
Second. shimming to align headlight buckets must be done in two planes:
back & forth on the stock-huge holes, and up/down with shim washers or a
hammer. Our minds don't work well in two planes, so this adjustment is NOT
intuitive. A further complication is the possible loss of the stock plastic
bushings on both ends of the raise/lower bar that causes random shifts in bucket

position, or collision damage that used one or both replacement fenders with
different sized openings. Good luck- J Deryke

Neither of my buckets are stamped on #1488. Maybe too early a car? The one
in best shape is sprayed the original car color where the wallowed out one
is not. Both are in the sandblast booth right now. The Kirk Evans light kit
is great quality and was a breeze to install....relatively. The worst part
has been trying to clean up the mess from my prior owner. I'd have had the
whole thing done in 4 hours otherwise.

I bought a replacement bucket for 1362, thats when I found that the early one
had mount holes and the later style had studs. I gave up and reconditioned the
original. Still I can't get my ring to mount without dragging when closing. YOUR
right, My mind don't work in 2 planes.. Bill 1362

Firewall/cover sold. Thank you buyers!
Ok all gone! Wait what?s in that box over there....

original message-
The BMW seats are sold so that leaves the firewall/engine cover for the blowout
price of $100, including shipping anywhere in the U.S.
For that price you could have fun experimenting and fab your own flat firewall
design!

Thanks,

I had a deadline to meet.
Yesterday was the annual local Boeing plant show and shine.
I've been talking about it for 11 years, and you never know when it's your
last year, so I said I'd finish my Pantera and bring it this year....

Put 11 miles on it yesterday, but was up very late a couple of nights
getting it there.
Lots of little stuff still left to do but 3217 is alive again. First time on
the road since 1980!

Thank you all for your help and encouragement in this long process.

I've learned that Ford era Panteras are very difficult to restore to
original appearance.
Original parts are very hard to find and the reproduction stuff is 90%
disappointment. The owners are the biggest resource attached to owning one
of these cars - the best part for sure.

Special thanks to Mike Drew, Bill Taylor, and Mike Dailey for the huge
resource that they have been to me in this journey.

Barry

Congrats, I bet that was one nerve wracking heck of a drive.

Hi guys,

Jonathan's spectacularly original Mangusta is featured in this weekend's
Salon Priv? concours in conjunction with the Silverstone Classic vintage races
in England. The Daily Telegraph did a wonderful feature on the car which
just appeared on their website:

For whatever it's worth I have a late model 72 and it has a drain plug.
