Ah, the *best* place.
 
IMNSHO (In My Not So Humble Opinion)
 
The best place is to connect the lamp power is the  load terminal of the 
ammeter. The ammeter load terminal is the  terminal with the big wire that 
doesn't go to the battery. This  connection allows the alternator to provide 
the current to the lamps while  maintaining correct functioning of the

If you connect the lamp power to the battery, lamp current will  indicate 
on the ammeter as a battery charging current when the alternator is  
supplying the load. If the alternator is not supplying the load, the drain on  the 
battery due to the lamps will not be indicated on the  ammeter.
 
The actual lamp circuit should contain a relay which connects lamp  power 
from the ammeter terminal when you want the  lamps activated.
