Porsche uses a plastic impeller in the water pump which is known to fail at
a certain mileage; he was unaware and drove past that mileage. It popped
but fortunately he saw it right away and shut down. He just had to have a
water pump change. But if you don't see it and continue driving, a blown
head gasket is a sure thing.
Is your friend's engine damaged beyond the head gasket? Or would it be
able to get back on the road with just a new head gasket and water pump?
In any case, it sucks. :<(
