I recall driving home from the market as a youth. Went to step on the brakes
and nothing! I looked down to see a cantaloupe stuck under the pedal! This
is how the term "mashing the brakes" came about. What a mess.

Similar thing happened to me when I was 9 years old !
I had a 5hp go-kart with friction brakes (against the tire) that I
could lean out and get it up to 45mph.  One day I'm racing around the
neighborhood and find myself with the throttle stuck wide open.  The
brakes weren't effective at all...  That's the day I learned how to
swerve into my yard and spin-out.  The gas cap had come off and stuck
in the throttle linkage.

Stuff happens... ;-)
