[DeTomaso] FW: Part I: Road to Phoenix---Oklahoma City to Roswell

We drive from Houston to Colorado every year for skiing. Flying is faster,
but the drive helps us unwind.

Here's what I think I know:

The drive through west Texas is spectacular. It isn't as scenic as the
Rockies, but it's still fun. You'll find long straight country roads, with
very nice people, and lots of nothing.

Driving on the interstate is boring. Highways are much better. I-10 from
San Antonio to El Paso is an exception.

We normally cross into NM through Clovis. Clovis is a nice town, but
there's nothing there to comment on. It's a good place to eat and gas up.
There, that's a comment.

Amarillo has The Big Texan - home of the 72 oz steak, eat it all and it's
free. It isn't a fantastic, drive 100 miles out of the way must see/do, but
if you're going through, you should stop.

Amarillo also has a Rudy's BBQ, which started in Leon Springs, TX (just
outside of San Antonio). It has the best BBQ in the world (flame bait).

Just west of Amarillo on I-40 is the Cadillac ranch. It's mostly just a
dozen or so Cadillacs stuck in the ground at a 45-degree angle. It's a
pretty decent photo-op. The cars are too far from the road to pose with the
Panteras - which would be pretty cool.

Carlsbad Caverns is in New Mexico, directly below Roswell, but much further
south. It's a pretty good destination.

I don't know much about NM west of Carlsbad or the southern part of Arizona.
I've been that way before, but I was only 9 years old at the time.

Not true.

Fresno to Oklahoma City is only 1,453 Interstate miles. I'm sure some back
road options can be found
to make the trip more interesting.
Add in the 1,048 miles to Phoenix and then another 613 back to Fresno, gives
a total journey of 3,114

Fresno to Roswell, 1,111 miles.
Add in the loop to Phoenix and then home to Fresno and that cuts it to only
2,216 miles

The year I drove with you and Trevor over the Sierras I put over 1,400 miles
on 2511. Gas and oil was all 2511 asked for.

Just this past New Year's day my little sojourn into the Fresno foothills
wound up being a drive to Yosemite and then over
Tioga Pass to the other side of the Sierras which found a fresh 350 miles on
the odometer by the time I pulled back into my garage.

Like Tony Harvey said -

"Use your car for what it was intended. DRIVE IT!!"

Larry - no stroke here
