Martin,   I have used the Crane rocker conversion kit with good success.   There is no machining required, and you can do it with the heads on the engine.  The only thing I would say about it is that the studs are 5/16 diameter  as they screw into the heads.  That might preclude the use of a lot of spring pressure on a cam with a a lot of lift etc.  The cam in my engine was a moderate hydraulic flat tappet, and I never had any problems.  I believe the kits are still available from the various vendors.       Shaun G.

            Good news: it is a relatively cheap and easy upgrade to make.
It would be a major improvement over the stock stamped steel non adjustable
rocker arms.

            Bad news: it is not so easy that it is a bolt on deal.  The
heads would need to come off and be modified to accept a proper new mounting
stud for the roller rockers.  The addition of just this modification would
not significantly improve the performance of an otherwise bone stock engine.
(it wouldn't hurt the engine though).


          A good starting point for modifying your engine and funding it
with your checking account is to figure out what you want to do:  improve
reliability; improve horsepower; improve bling; etc.    Then remember that
horsepower, speed and engine improvements cost money.  How much do you want?
What is the budget? (this is a common question whose answer is often naively
given and more often proved to be too low at the final accounting of the
project)

         Finally, please note that engine mods done is isolation, like
simply changing the rocker arms on a stock engine will frequently give
disappointing results.  Sometimes isolated mods can hurt engine performance,
i.e. mounting a large high performance carb on top of a stock engine may
well decrease the driveability of the engine.   Modifying the engine should
be done with the understanding that the best mods are done with the
understanding that all the engine components work together and the better
you chose those components and other components that will compliment them
the better the end result.

engine is all Stock now with about 17,000 miles on her.  I have purchased a
