[DeTomaso] How to lubricate a new speedometer cable

My "original" (1973) speedometer cable failed in 2008.  My new replacement (done in 2008) is ticking, sticking, and needle bouncing.  I installed it (in '08) without adding any lubricant.  It always had a little squeak but has now become annoying.

What should I do to the new one, before installation, to ensure longer/quieter/smoother life?
