[DeTomaso] 40 and over the hill

Dear Tom,

There are remarkable similarities in our mis-spent automotive youth and you know EJ and Bob from Omaha! I met EJ at the Fun Rallies in the late eighties. I *think* that he still has the POCA club record for the quarter mile. I met Bob at a Shelby event in Oklahoma. Both guys are good drivers and class acts.

Well, yes, you should drive to the Rally. The karma and metaphysics seem to be firming up for a squadron run. I hope things continue to fall together and reach fruition.

Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Saw a white one idling at a stop light downtown as I crossed the street one night. I'll never forget the sound of the exhaust note as I walked by. Saw a black one in a small used car lot in 1977 when I was close to graduating. After I took my first job there was yellow one in the apartment complex I lived in.

I traded in the Z for a 1982 Mazda RX-7, which I started to autocross. I was at a street autocross in Iowa in 1986 that drew cars from the surrounding states because it was a long, fast course over city streets with two long straights back and forth across a long bridge. It was there that I saw the Panteras run by Bob Woodhouse and E.J. Poss. Seeing those cars reminded me how much I wanted one years earlier. I decide then and there I was going to buy one and ended up selling the RX-7 and buying my 1973 Euro GTS that year. Took a year to restore the car and I've been driving/enjoying it ever since.

Never could convince myself to make the drive by myself but with the collective interest shown in get a squadron of midwest Panteras together to make the drive to Phoenix this year, I may finally get to check this off my bucket list.
