And the purpose of the diodes are to kill the flyback pulse from the coil when the relay is shut off.

It only matters if the relay is electronically controlled, like in an EFI circuit.

The diode also requires that the coil circuit is correctly polarized, or else the diode will short out the circuit, or burn out.
