According to a loss specialist I emailed, if this happened today, if the insurance company paid you for the stolen car, and it was recovered, you would have the option of keeping it as long as you paid them back for whatever they paid you, but you have no obligation to buy it back.
You could also then file a claim for any damage done to it while it was stolen if you decide to keep it, after you buy it back.

Things related to this were discussed on Fchat and IIRC since the car was not stolen from you insurance does not cover it.
I'm not even sure it would be a tax deductable loss, for the same reason, and it would probably be under the 2% exclusion rule even if it were, but I could be wrong there.
