Thats the same lightweight aluminum Ford block I carried unaided into a
PCNC monthly meeting back in the '90s. Joe brought it to a Tech Session as
well. He has had it since at least the '80s. One thing I never did was to check
cylinder height- they apparently came in varying deck heights which at the
time caused trouble getting off-the-shelf rods and pistons with the correct
compression heights. Now you can get anything. They used a unique external
belt drive for an internal dry sump oil pump to meet racing rules at the time.
At that time, Joe didn't have the pump sections that go between extensions
on the iron main caps that define the dry sump sections. The long pump
driveshaft, pulley and special steel oil pan were also missing.
When I was considering buying it, I would have used std 4-bolt main caps
and put the dry-sump caps on a shelf until the rest of the parts showed up- or
I had them built to size by Peterson. I talked to Phil Remington at Dan
Gurney's shop about this engine; he remembered them well. A truly unique engine
that maybe belongs in a museum or under glass in a living room instead of
hidden in a passenger car. Another of my old friends has a Ford SOHC 427
displayed that way. FWIW- J Deryke
