[DeTomaso] German motors

On the german motor theme,  I pulled the V8 motor out of my Audi last year and
did a tear down and head rebuild (5 valves, variable timing).  I actually only
needed to change the thermostat, but it was a curiosity thing … just how complex
are these new motors?  The good news is that for a modest fee you can download
tech docs from Audi and get up to speed on the control systems.  The bad news is
that Bosch has been through many iterations (8, I think) on the control system,
so I’m not sure I would try and mod it unless I was an engineer at Bosch
Motronic and could get source code.

I have the Merc SL55  (supercharged 5.5l) and my friend has the E63.  His engine
is more entertaining above 5000 rpm, but mine is more enteraining below 5000 rpm
(500 ft lbs).  With that in mind, if anyone wanted to make a truly unique ride,
I suggest the VW V10 TDI 5.0l.  It has 530 ft-lbs at 2000 rpm and while it won’t
set top speed records (350hp), it’ll probably take medals stoplight to
stoplight.   You’d just need to sync the Cleveland soundtrack to your tach and
pipe it through your sound system as the Diesel doesn’t make the best noises ;-)
As for me,  I am in the stay with the snorty, poorly mannered, carbureted, high
character original lump camp, albeit bumped to 400+ hp.
