Did you replace the complete assembly including the housing or just the
inner cable?

Probably some distance from the trans. If the problem was very close to the
trans there would be no oscillation. Now the wire binds and tension builds
until the binding breaks free causing the ticking.

Poor routing near the speedo head unit, or could it be anywhere in the
cable?

That would indicate a suboptimal cable routing. Check for tight bends or
pinched cable.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Tic-tic-tic from my new speedo cable

Hi All

Long story, but I finally connected my new speedometer cable after my old
one broke last year.

First drive with the car and I hear a "tic-tic-tic" from the speedo, and the
needle is rather unsteady. At first I thought I had a rod knocking or
something, but it is not engine related, it is speed related, and it comes
from the speedometer.

This is typically a sign of impending speedo cable failure, right? Is there
anything that can be done or adjusted? I don't think I have cross threaded
anything anywhere...

Thanks!
