[DeTomaso] really dumb question about oil

Which plug did you remove?

There's one for an oil temp sensor.

There's another that is the drain plug.

The oil temp sensor plug is in the front right under the crank pulley.

The drain plug is on the driver's side closer to the filter, but on the
bottom edge.

Subject: [DeTomaso] really dumb question about oil

OK, so I know this is a really elementary question to ask, and I should
absolutely know the answer, but...
I changed my oil tonight and it seemed as if not enough oil drained into the
plastic container I placed under the oil pan. The dipstick (no, not me)
read only a half-quart low before I drained the oil. Just to make sure the
angle of the car wasn't affecting anything, after the oil seemed to have
drained out, I lowered the car off the jack and unplugged the oil hole in
the valve cover (the filter was also removed).
After about 20 minutes, when the oil was barely dripping out of the oil pan,
I replaced the filter and the oil pan bolt and began refilling the engine
with oil.
After only 5 quarts, the dipstick read full. I have what is supposed to be
a 10-quart Armando oil pan. Now, I know that even with a ten-quart pan one
usually only has to add 8 quarts or so, but 5 seems way too low.
Tomorrow morning, will the oil have "settled" or something, allowing me to
add more?
Did I miss something simple?
After revealing that I don't know this stuff, do I even deserve to own a
Pantera??
Thanks,
Chris
