Although I admit mine is an odd choice, I really prefer wall-to-wall carpet 
in my garage.   It keeps it warm, and makes it much more comfortable to 
work under the car.   Known fluid spills (for instance, when I'm going to drain 
the cooling system) can be dealt with ahead of time by covering the carpet 
with something absorbant.   Major work (pulling an engine) can be dealt with 
by rolling up the carpet in that area of the garage.

Best of all, it's free--my garage is carpeted with cast-offs from neighbors 
who put new carpets in their homes.   Every few years another neighbor 
decides to recarpet their house, and so my garage gets upgraded. :>)
