This size of the foot on your thermostat is  quite normal.
 
 
The bypass plate has a 0.75 inch diameter hole with an area of  0.442 sq in.

 
The foot of the thermostat has a 0.66 inch diameter with an area of  0.342 
sq in.

 
The foot of the thermostat can block only 77.4% (0.342 x 100/0.442)  of the 
bypass plate hole if it is perfectly (unlikely) positioned vertically in  
the bypass plate hole.

 
This means that 22.6% of the water volume which bypasses when the  
thermostat is closed can still bypass when the thermostat is  open.

 
A way to eliminate this situation, IMHO, is to totally  block the bypass 
path and use a Windsor style thermostat.
