Just got back from my ZF guy and I am lucky. Just a broken snap ring. Life is good.

Well the problem is not in the linkage or shift box. Talked to Lloyd and he thought it might be the cross shaft. Drained the fluid this morning and found the end of an e clip attached to the drain plug. So out it comes. Will keep you all posted. Need to be ready for Daytona, Nov 3.

Dear Mark,
I suspect that you have a problem with the linkage. I suspect that
the linkage has become loose at one of the U joints. I would recommend that
you check them
all and make sure that they are all tightened down. The ones
in the engine bay are readily seen and accessed. The one that got me is the
one I forgot-- in the center console *underneath* the ashtray. It is easily
accessible by pulling the ashtray and applying wrenching devices. My loose
linkage gave me fits until *somebody* else told me to check it. Good luck.
P.S. apply a good penetrating oil to the U joints after
tightening. They are unbelievably stiff from the factory and worse after 40
years!!
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Check the set screws (grub screws) on the shift selector at the ZF. Should
be
two removeable rubber plugs on the bottom of the selector box for
access.

During my last outing at Watkins Glen, I had a problem getting into first.
Ultimately there is a problem shifting into all gears. The shift lever does
noot
center itself but stays in the position it was last left in. Looking for
your
thoughts and suggestions.
