Actually, Permatex makes a dedicated water pump/thermostat neck RTV, which 
is gray in color and comes in a smaller tube.   I've used that stuff to good 
effect also.   I don't know what makes it different, but apparently it's 
specifically formulated to work against water, rather than oil.
