michael, unfortunately the corporations now control the government, so any "regulation" is to favor the corporate interests, not those of the workers.  so of course, unions do not have as much positive influence any more.  re: qantas, ya, god forbid the unions try to stop the company, which doubled its profits over the prewious year, from outsourcing 1000 more yobs - that would only increase the profits, not result in airfare reductions for customers.  :>/  seems no one else is doing anything about it..

regarding massive sums of money creating an opportunity for the degradation of morals and honor, do you think why that may have something to do w/the fact that it doesn't matter who is in power - democrat or republican - they will still sell out to corporate influence?  it cracks me up hearing folks complain about "welfare", when the truth is the largest share of welfare goes to those who need it the least - the corporations.

and, you said:

"Children shouldn't work in sweat shops, workplaces should be safe to
avoid disasters like the Triangle Shirt factory fire, Miners shouldn't
breathe coal dust, unions helped change these things before government
agencies like OSHA existed. "

so you expect me to believe that govt agencies caused these things?!?  in fact, the above have largely been rectified - in the usa anyway - thanks to osha, epa, unions, etc.  it has been the efforts of corporations to awoid these, by getting govt regulations which allow them to move offshore so they can awoid these above atrocities you mention.

at some point, the resources become limited, and third-world countries/peoples ripe for exploitation also become limited - pretty soon, there's gonna be resource shortages, (peak oil?), and no one left to rip off.  and when there's no one left to make stuff at slave wages, and there's no one left who's being paid enough to afford it, who is gonna buy all the crap?  (uh, i mean all the material goods?)  what then?  party's over... even for the rich...  unless the rich get a clue and realize they should not bite the hand that feeds them.  that making a little less so that the middle class can have a decent lifestyle is in their own interest.  so that there *IS* a middle class to support the consumption that keeps their factories running...oh, sorry - too logical...  meanwhile, let the ponzi scheme continue...
