[DeTomaso] Charging System Problem FIXED

As I understand it, when the car is moving the fans are not needed, they’re
only there to create airflow in stop and go traffic. So in theory both
should be on thermostats. That said, I’ve put one of mine on a switch, to
feel in control J

My current Pantera cools perfectly, always has. My previous Pantera had
marginal cooling. Only after fixing all the below, it cooled OK and rarely
needed the fan:

-leak free hoses and pipes, double clamped, can now hold 15 lbs pressure for
24 hours

-leak free radiator cap

-proper overflow bottle

-proper Cleveland 180F thermostat

-new water pump

-new radiator (alu, but that’s not critical). Must be for Pantera

-fans: one was not working, both were almost ½” away from the radiator

-no air pockets in cooling system

As you can see there are many things that can result in not proper cooling.
Living in Arizona doesn’t help either J

Mikael,

When I bought the car, it had one fan that was on all of the time, and one
that was controlled by a switch. But due to the warm temperatures in Arizona
where I live, or the inefficient old radiator, or both, the water temp was
always a problem. On more than one occasion, I unknowingly turned off the
switch and didn't notice that it was off until I had a problem. So I removed
the switch from the second fan, and set it to always be on.

That has been a good solution for me given where I live, but what you say
also makes a lot of sense. Now that I know I can run both fans without
draining the battery, perhaps I need to evaluate whether I should do that,
particularly if one fan and the new radiator work under most conditions.

I'm still hesitant to put one of the fans back on a switch. I don't always
check my water temp as often as I should, and I know I'll accidentally bump
that switch off again. Perhaps one fan should always be on, and the other on
a thermostat? Does anyone ever run the fans off of two thermostats set to
different temperatures?

Regards,

Sean

Sean, great you got the charging fixed.

Question though, it sounds like your radiator fans are on almost all the
time? I don't think they should be, as opposed to the A/C fan that has to be
on all the time when the A/C is used. The radiator fans on my Pantera are
rarely on, one is thermostat driven and comes on occasionally in stop and
go, the other one is turned on via a switch by me if the car gets too hot,
hasn't happened yet. So why am I writing this, it's because if you have to
have the fans on that much, I think you have an underlying cooling system
issue, that's currently being compensated by having the fans on, instead of
being corrected. That may mean your engine runs too hot and for sure it puts
a strain on your charging system.

Sorry to be a pain, especially when the heading includes the word "FIXED".
