Mustang that had an intermittent problem that I couldn't solve so I took it
to my local dealer, "Go see Cal Worthington", those in Southern California
will know who I am talking about. :-]] This was 15-20 years ago and they
wanted more than $900 to "fix" it. I asked them if they guaranteed that it
would work, they said no. So I paid for the diagnostic check and took my car
back. "It seemed a little strange that they wanted to do about 14 different
things to the car to solve one problem". So I read that I could use a paper
clip to get the code myself, which indicated the egr valve had a problem. It
turns out that when I had the heater on, a small stream of water was
squirting straight into the egr valve. I replaced the hose and, voila,
problem solved! And guess what, the $900 estimate didn't say anything about
the hose or the egr valve! So they would have taken my $900 and said, that
since it didn't solve the problem, they would have to continue replacing
parts. What a bunch of friggin moron crooks! Me, not much of a backyard
mechanic, solving a problem that they should have found easily!

Find someone with a 'code reader' before you start throwing $$ at it
guessing what parts to replace.

Subject: [DeTomaso] NPC Check Engine Light
Hello guys,
I was driving my new Honda CR-Z Hybrid thru Death Valley the other night
when I came around a curve and found a rock in the middle of my lane. I
wasn't able to avoid it so I straddled it but it was too tall and banged up
the bottom of my car. As soon as that happened I got a check engine light
which turns out to be a Secondary HO2S Circuit Fault (sensor2), O2 sensor as
near as I can figure. I can see no apparent damage to the sensor but the
muffler has a big dent in it. Is the dented muffler the likely cause of the
problem, increased heat due to the restriction, or does the circuit fault
mean there is no signal from the sensor, or something else? I know if I take
it to the dealer that they will want to replace the muffler and tail pipe
for a thousand dollars and still no guarantee of solving the problem. Any
thoughts?
Thanks,
Art
