[DeTomaso] smoke

first major mishap today
 
drove car - went to restart, wouldn't start - could smell gas in carb as i flooded it - starter motor cranked away...so i had power - seemed to be spark - called Bob Levitt who directed me to the dist wire...unplugged and replugged it at dist and at coil - car started - thanks Bob
 
drove for a bit and saw a lot of smoke, so shut down and towed car home
 
other facts: 
 
after every drive i have hoisted the car to see what's going on - i have always noticed two things - the coil always had a drop of oil hanging off the bottom - consistency of motor oil - dumb question: is there oil inside the coil?  
 
separately, there are a few drops of coolant sprinkled here and there after every drive, around where the tubes end and the hoses go on up to the motor - have tightened various hose clamps to no avail
 
thoughts: maybe i have a bad coil? - maybe (if it has oil) it leaks and that caused the smoking - maybe the coolant leak got worse and burned on something (but it didn't smell sweet like AF) - maybe it was electrical (but it didn't smell like electrical smoke)
 
questions: is there a way to test if the coil is good? - or can you tell from the facts that it is definitely bad? - what else would you do to chase this down?
