[DeTomaso] Air cleaner height above carb?

That 3" measurement is partially a need for space above carburetor float
bowl vents and over an unaltered Holley carb choke housing. So if you're
thinking about TBI or EFI which don't have such things, you can easily lower the
dimension an inch with no effect. Especially if the air inlet edges of your
throttle body are nicely radiused so the horizontally incoming air can make
the turn into the vertical part easier. A further possibility is to mill the
horizontal part of the intake manifold by some amount; for racer friends,
I've cut up to 1/2" off the carb/TBI mount surface for hood clearance
without a noticable power loss. Probably is a small drop from absolute peak power
but most won't miss it.
Incidently, dyno tests have shown that air-gap intakes produce about the
same power as non-air gap types, once the engine is thoroughly warmed up; it
just takes longer to stabilize a running emp when running an air gap, so drag
racers like them. FWIW- J Deryke
