[DeTomaso] NPC--WTF are these things?

Hi guys,

More WTF items:

The thing on the right is a very light aluminum housing; the black thing in 
the center is a spring-loaded plunger.   On the back side, the thing says 
"Boost Guard" with a part number "77-0171".   Is this some sort of turbo 
pop-off valve or something?   The cardboard box above it has another part 
number; this thing was inside a plastic bag with that same number on it.

The thing on the left?   Beats the hell out of me!
