Here in Los Angeles county it must be code to have a steel cable inside the spring because that's all Home Depot carries, IIRC.
Yes, I installed those after a friend's broke and damaged his car.

prings SHOULD have a cable run thru them and secured on both ends of the 
pring, just in case 1 does cut loose. Lucky you!
