Michael,

That is a very common thing to happen. It is best to run a rope or chain
down the center of the spring and attach both ends to the track. Make sure
you have enough room for the spring to expand.

The next time it snaps it will stay up in place and not damage anything,
like your head.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Near tradgey last night

Not in the general Scheme of things, all loved ones and pets are safe and
sound.

I heard a noise, got up, looked around, didn't see anything and went back
to bed.

Came home early today because we are having Guests ( Rob and his wife from
JAX

are going to the HHI Concours with with this weekend.

In the garage wall there is a fresh, nice big gash and lying on the floor
is a garage door spring.

It snapped in the middle of the night and managed to missed The Pantera,
Joni's SLK and two motorcycles

on it's journey from the door frame, into the wall (at what must have been
a fairly rapid pace)

and then to the floor.

IT was a 140 lb. rated spring about 25" long, I have never paid much
attention to those things, interesting that

they remain unstressed when the door is up ( open ) which is like .01% of
the time and extended and stressed

when the door is closed (99.9% of the time).

Our house was built in 1992, so these springs are 19 years old, there are
two per door.

It was easy enough to replace ( they sell them at Lowe's ) , I think I'll
probably

do the other three soon as well.

Check yours, I've never heard of one snapping before this one, anybody else?
