As many have mentioned, the 'dash-zero' GT-40 and 'dash-1' of the Mangusta
were different than the 'dash-2 of the Pantera in many ways. There was also
a transition 'dash-1-1/2' version according to the authority- Lloyd
Butfoy- that was used in some early '71 Panteras, and consisted of a
Mangusta/GT-40 gearbox with an upside-down differential case to adapt it to the Pantera.
All these 'non-dash-2' diff cases used only 4 bolts between the bellhousing
and diff case, with no allen bolts through from the inside. This case,
besides what's been mentioned so far, was also several pounds lighter and is
physically smaller in several dimensions than the later 'dash-2' diff case. The
dash-2 clutch release will not fit nor will later bellhousings because the
circular part of the early diff case is 1-1/4" smaller in diameter. Some of
these early ZFs had a unique limited-slip in their differentials that did not
use clutches but were built along the lines of a 'Detroit Locker' for
racing.
A great deal of such a transaxle's value lies in whether it actually is a
Mangusta/GT-40 oriented box or an upside-down 'dash 1-1/2' box for early
Panteras. In any case, very few internal parts are available for any of these
early boxes if it's not already in excellent shape. There have been many
articles on these ZF varients in the POCA Newsletter over the years- the last
being Feb 2011. Cheers- J DeRyke
