[DeTomaso] DeTomaso Digest, Vol 80, Issue 31-Hard Launches

Richard,

I assume your problem was from having to slip the clutch a lot before completely releasing the clutch?  I know a lot of Panteras have aluminum flywheels so it isn't always a problem.  If your engine had a big cam etc. and didn't make much torque at very low RPM, it could be a bad combination on the street with an aluminum flywheel, unless you just rev up the motor and drop the clutch like Bob, LOL.

But I still think that if your car launches OK with an aluminum flywheel, it will be easier on the disk, especially at shifts.  I'm putting a street engine together with an aluminum flywheel and EFI that should run real well just off idle.  Hopefully I'll know soon.

The aluminum flywheel does not have the mass of a steel flywheel and takes
more torque to get the car moving. It puts more stress on the drive train at
launch. I had one in my corvette with a 327. At launch it would almost stall
and burned up clutch disks. I contacted the manufacture who stated I needed
a heavier flywheel and sent me a billet steel flywheel for free with a new
disk.

The lower angular momentum of an aluminum flywheel should make it easier for
the engine RPM to adjust to the input shaft RPM and reduce wear on the
clutch disk.

I don't have any numbers on the angular momentum of the flywheel compared to
the rest of the engine.  It must be somewhere, has anyone looked into it?
