[DeTomaso] R.S. Thermo & restrictor plate ??

Michael Shortt,

Yes, that is what I had in mind ------ I have never used any thing else -- ( Well the Pantera when I got into it the first time had no plate, but had the hat type thermostat ). I installed a stock restrictor plate with the hole in the center and a new thermostat which also had the hat/button/foot that is for 351C use only --- to match ( so to speak ) the restrictor plate hole. And I used a stock OEM style Ford water pump housing. I had  run this for 144,000 miles in a '70 Torino I bought new with out a problem ( ran it from Sunnyvale Ca. to Houston TX. and then to Topeka Ks. area and stayed at around 90 mph most of that time ___ back in the day ). Also I had run this on other Torino 351C engines over the years. I could not see why this OEM set-up would not still work today. Unless these OEM style parts aren't actually built to the 1970 spec. I do realize the Pantera coolant set-up is not a Torino. At that time ( about one year ago ), I started
trying to figure out how these two parts actually physically worked together. At that time I took some measurements etc. but did not resolve my questions. So here I am again with out the answers I'm looking for. I was trying to figure out the fitment of the hat to the hole in the restrictor ------- as to diameter of each and the location of the hat/foot to that hole when thermostat is open and when it is closed. Which would also bring into account how deeply the restrictor is inserted down into it's cavity. Was Ford's original intent for the hat/foot to totally block off that hole when the thermostat is open? What is the total extend/retract travel of the had/foot?

Respectively,

I'm confused, are you attempting to use a restrictor plate ( Ring with a hole in the middle ) AND a proper themostat at the same time?

To All,

It looks like, after more checking, that the mounting area will not accept the restrictor at .125 above fully seated. So maybe I'm figuring the extend/retract distance of the hat incorrectly. Maybe all is ok. I guess I will have to go put the thermo in hot water and check travel of hat.

Back to work at it,

 To All,

Those of you running a Robert Shaw OEM 351C with hat style thermostat ( or any one with information ) ----- have you checked or is there any documentation showing how deeply to install the restrictor plate into the block. I did some measuring and my findings show that if the restrictor plate is mounted fully seated that the hat would not reach the upper surface of the plate by about .097". Therefore if the plate were mounted about .125 above fully seated that the hat would protrude into restrictor opening by ~ .020 of an inch. It appears to me that if not mounted correctly you would bypass too much coolant when thermostat is open. Thus causing engine coolant ( at engine )  temperature to be higher than necessary.

Any information welcome,
