Trip, Pantera motor mounts are in two parts. The bottom section that bolts
to the chassis are all the same left to right and early to late. The top
halves have offset holes- or on some Panteras, two holes. Our '72 L had one
offset hole on the right side and TWO holes in the left side top. Documented in
a POCA article many years ago, I reversed only the upper motor mounts
left-to-right and slid the entire engine/ZF back 3/4", gaining enough clearance
to run a big-cap Duraspark distributor. Nothing needs to be disturbed in
doing this including wiring, fuel and even the exhausts. The rearmost sheet
metal ZF mounts must be bent into a shallow 'S' and an extra 3/4" thick spacer
provided to fill the new gap between the ZF mount tabs.
In your case, you can probably gain your alt-clearance back by slacking off
on the two ZF mount-bolts in back, slacking off on the two long connecting
bolts holding the engine mount halves together, and slacking off on the two
bolts per side (4 total) holding the upper motor mounts to the block. Do NOT
remove any of the bolts completely.
Put a board under the pan and jack the engine up until the block is ALMOST
clear of the mounts, then pry back between the frame and crank pulley for
clearance. When you've gained as much clearance as possible, lower the engine
and tighten ALL the loose bolts. You'll likely gain about 1/4" clearance
in doing this, and no more alt-to-firewall noise. Good luck- J DeRyke
