[DeTomaso] A/C Rebuild - Vents

Thanks to everyone. That's exactly what I needed.

I'm going to stick with 2 vents, and I'll just clean them up as best as I
can. I like the idea of a fresh air intake, but I'm not going to tackle
that project now. I have enough to do.

What is the current thought about the A/C assembly regarding the vents.

My car has 2 vents on the dash, plus the defroster vents. Didn't Bondurant
modify the dash to have a 3rd vent?

>>>Not Bondurant--Bill Stroppe. It was a rather sad attempt to increase the
perceived function of the A/C but it didn't really work, at it was dropped
soon after.

> I've seen the later dash that has a
piece added to the dash that directs the air downward. I think that's one
of the L mods.

>>>That's actually just a block of wood that mounts in the place where the
third vent was inserted; it contains a light which shines down on the
instruments, and the seat belt warning light.

>Does it make sense to add a third vent? Or do I just have vent envy? If
the 3rd vent helps, were do I find them? The vendors? Which one?

>>>I wouldn't bother. The vents are impossible to come by except used, and
they're quite expensive.

>What about adding a fresh air system to the cowl area? Necessary? Has
anyone done this? I only ask because it seems like nearly every car has
one, but the Pantera doesn't - at least mine doesn't.

>>>The very early cars used a certain style of system, and the later
L-models used a different system, but the in-between cars like yours (and
mine) are lacking any sort of fresh air into the cabin. There are various
ways to overcome that, some more elegant than others, some requiring more
work than others. It's probably not a bad idea no matter how you choose to
tackle it.

I just haven't been that ambitious yet, but it is on my far, far-away list
of things to do to my car.

>I don't want to do the Hall mod that puts the vent in the end of the door.
I just want a climate control system that works reasonably well.

>>>Fresh air induction can certainly help, but if the air you're inducting
is hot, that will make life harder for your A/C, and bringing cold air in
makes life hard for your heater when it's cold out. You'd want to close
that off and recirculate the cooler air inside the cabin to make the A/C
more effective. Perhaps that's one reason why they did away with fresh air
induction for a few years?
