The stock spare tire was a collapsible spare in 6x 14" size on a stock Ford
steel wheel that cleared the stock brakes ans used stock lug nuts.
Collapsible spares are available in many cars today and can be mounted on any wheel
in spite of untrained tire shop personnel telling you they cannot be mounted
or dismounted. What they mean is, THEY can't do it. The spare fits in a
depressed area of the rear trunk with a hold-down stud and wing nut. Or, the
same tire/wheel will fit up front but you'll have to add some sort of
hold-down system. The prototype Pantera had the spare up front with no hold-down,
and in the initial crash test, it came thru the windshield, forcing a second
test...
The stock collapsible spare needs an inflator can and adapter hose, and
there are two types. One uses freon, the other uses PROPANE! Obviously, in a
hot trunk, this last is a bomb and is not recommended except by terrorists. If
the inflator can says, 'DANGER- Extremely Flammable,' it is propane filled.
Good luck, Sue- J Deryke
