OK, didn't replace the clutch, same one that was in there before the ZF came
out for rebuild. I do have some play at the lever with the slave hooked up,
but only about 1.7 mm. Not much, but some. It wouldn't make any difference
to move the lever away from the slave: I disconnected the slave, and didn't
have any more play than with it installed, do changing the angle of the arm
wouldn't increase the play.

Keep in mind that I know only about 1% as much as most of the guys posting
here about this, but it makes sense to me that a new, thicker clutch plate
would tend to move the lever arm closer to the slave cylinder.
If the lever arm is positioned on the clutch spline such that it is now
jammed against the slave when the slave piston is fully pressed into the
bore, you will have no play.
Is that what is going on?
If so, you need to undo the lever arm from the splined shaft and rotate it
to the next position away from the slave.
My understanding is that as long as you have SOME play, that is, the system
is not preloaded with pressure on the clutch lever at rest, it should be OK.
I think there was some discussion on some past thread that when the clutch /
slave heats up it could decrease the free play, but I don't recall if that
was finally accepted or just a theory
I'm waiting for Mike to tell me, "WRONG-O, buddy!" :-)

dimensions are as you say, then I may have another problem of which I don't
know.
The clutch does feel to be engaging, but only at the very top of the travel,
much higher than it used to be. I have no free play at the top of the
pedal, didn't have much before but more than this. I can only move the
lever arm back about 1.6 mm from the stop. Even when I completely
disconnect the slave from the lever arm in the bell housing, I don't get any
more free play there than that. I've been advised that I should get more
like 2-2.5 mm. Not much granted. I'm going bleed the clutch again and take
it for another drive.
We'll see.

Let's take a few steps back and look at this. From you description, it
would appear that the clutch may not be engaging fully. Do you have any
free play at the slave cyl adjusting bolt? Is the clutch arm return spring
installed, and is it strong enough to move the clutch arm against the free
play adjusting bolt stop? If you do not have any free play at the slave cyl
and can't adjust any, then you may have to remove the clutch arm and rotate
it one spline.
I have both a Quella T/O bearing (China) and a National boxed Federal Mogul
1625 bearing (Mexico) in hand. The total thickness of the 1625 bearing is
approximately 0.070" thicker than the Quella bearing.
That, in itself, should not create a problem. The center race (the part
that is pressed onto the T/O
bearing hub carrier) of the 1625 bearing is thinner (narrower) than the
overall thickness of this bearing.
The excess thickness of this 1625 bearing is at the back side of the
bearing, toward the transaxle, NOT towards the pressure plate fingers. The
actual thickness of the center race is exactly the same (give or take a
thou) as the Quella bearing that I have. The net of all of this is that the
face of these two bearings, when installed, are in exactly the same place.
