[DeTomaso] ZF Coming Out

Dear Jack, Asa, Julian, Forest, and others,

Well, I am a dope. I've pulled and replaced four engines. The
last two by myself. I thought I was "purdy good" with that process, but
from this discussion I can see that I am ignorant.

I confess that I would have expected to disconnect the headers
from the exhaust; drain the coolant and, from what I had gleaned in the
past---jack up the back of the engine and pull the ZF off. I am glad to
hear that I have made it *harder* than it is. I just checked Mike Dailey
and Chuck Melton's websites to see if I was overlooking Pantera ZF pulling
and clutch changes for Dummys, but I didn't see one. Also, I didn't know
about the trick to unbolt the ZF from the bellhousing?? Fiendishly clever,
if I understand it correctly.

It certainly sounds like the task is pretty straightforward IF
you have an experienced "guide" or a step by step process with, um,
directions. Could this be something for the Newsletter? ....or an article
for Dailey or Melton's websites??????

                      Ignorant in Oklahoma, Chuck Engles

1)- None of the cooling apparatus need be touched to pull a ZF.
2)- Nor does any of the exhaust. The hoses and pipe couplings allow enough
motion without unbolting anything. It's just not that hard to do unless you
over-analyze the job and scare yourself.
A single 'retirement-age' guy once unbolted the bellhousing, unbolted the
AC condenser and slid the ZF back 6" then changed his clutch in the small
space created, in 3 hours- without pulling the ZF out (no help & no crane
available). Then he ran another competition event the next morning- 50 miles

away, and won his class. Just do it- J DeRyke
