A diode serves no purpose in this case, and the voltage is regulated by the voltage regulator. 
As I stated in my initial reply to Pat, the ammeter is merely indicating when the fans are on, by
showing a charge.  What you are seeing is the amount of current (amps) that the alternator is
"adding" to the system to supply the fans.  Yes, it can be confusing, but I know my system very
well, and I can use it as an indicator to show me that the fan is on, and whether it's one fan or
two that are on.
