Jim,

I did the same, I replaced my heater resistor with and adjustable one. It
let me set the lower speed at whisper quiet and I just leave it on all the
time at that setting unless I need defogging.

I used:
Resistor, 5O Watt, 5 Ohm Adjustable Wirewound / Memcor-Truohm / AR50-5.0
Resistor Mounting Bracket, Pair / Memcor-Truohm / 1441-00

Unfortunately, www.mouser.com used to carry these parts but they no longer
have them.

Not sure if the original style resistors are available.  I have repaired two
of
them (the ceramic base was broken) so they can be saved.  I have also bought
two
aftermarket ones that are adjustable.  They were less than $15 each if I
remember correctly.  I don't have the manufacturer name at hand just now.
I'll
try and find it this evening and forward. You might try SOBill's data base.

Is the stock blwer resistor still available? If not, is there an
aftermarket that will work?
