There was an article in the Dallas Morning News several weeks ago that  
reported most of the current literature on the subject of beliefs finds  that 
people do not alter them when presented with facts or information  to the 
contrary. In fact it may cause them to believe more strongly. This  applies 
across the spectrum and is not just about politics.
