[DeTomaso] NPC - Lesson on how to pass?

Last year at one of the races I attended and did course work for had a
big former ASA V8 stock car. He decided not to run the qualifying
round, so he ended up starting at the back of a 20 car pack. When the
real race came up, he layed way back on the pace car lap prior to the
start. When the pace car headed for the pit he eased into the throttle
and then as everyone rounded turn 10 onto the straight, he gunned it.
The first car passed the green flag and by the end of the straight, this
guy had passed all but two (or three) cars. It took him three more laps
to be in first place at which point he owned the track and began lapping
the slow cars.
Yes, his group included more than one class.

My experience has been that everyone is also more tuned in to their mirrors, as they know?the faster guys are going to be all over them. Both of these facts would have worked in his favor.
