[DeTomaso] NPC: Oversteer?

My favorite generic definition of automobile handling is: Understeer is when
you go into the wall headfirst, oversteer is when you hit the wall
backwards.

Sean,

There is probably a forum for those cars where you will find an answer and a
cure
I know front wheel drive cars can oversteer-- I clearly remember seeing a
Mini Cooper in full countersteering mode stopping just short of the Armco at
turn 6 at Riverside Raceway back in the old days- but I don't know the
dynamics of it.

Thanks Jack,
The rear rotates around a bit after initial understeer. It's a pretty
ell set up car from looking at the suspension layout: independent
uspension, swaybars front and rear. I think I ruined the handling by
eaving those hard as a rock old tires on the back though :)

Sean, are you sure you mean oversteer? FWD cars are notorious for
understeer- that is, overwhelming the front tires traction by trying to
both
steer and accelerate from the front wheels at the same time, which results
in massive sliding of the front tires. It's difficult (I'm told; I don't
drive such skinny-tire things that vigorously)) to get the rear end of such
cars to slide- which is oversteer.

And when oversteer does happen, it's often because you picked a rear tire
off the ground from too stiff a front swaybar or too short rear shock
travel. Cars nearly always corner better with all 4 tires touching the
pavement. And they look teetery on 3 wheels, maybe telling you you're close
to using the roof as a traction aid.... Cheers- J Deryke
