Not true, these are push-pull cables with a large and rigid center core cable push-pulling rods at the cable ends. The reason you need two cables is the fore-aft and cross gate movements in H pattern box, which are two separate movements. An automatic shifter (or sequential box) has a single cable, if it only worked in one direction you'd never be abe to shift back up to P or neutral :>)
 
Companies like Control Cables and Felsted make up cables to order, length and throw sepcific with whatever ends you need.
