[DeTomaso] Techno question: (second dumb question of theyear)Speedo cable

If it happened twice, most likely something isn't machined properly (i.e.
not straight and causing something to bind).

It's either that or your car is so fast, you need a stronger speedo to keep
from breaking it.

Dear Forum,

           The update:

The second assault on the back of the speedo gauge worked. I
removed the speedo cable and then proceeded to pull the drive cable out of
it. I didn't find two pieces......It looked pretty good to me. Then a
little voice said to check the speedometer drive unit on the right side of
the ZF.

It didn't come off easily, but it did come. I found that the drive
unit (is that the correct term?) was jammed by three metal bits. I removed
two metal tabs and bent one back and the unit would then turn. I looked at
the ZF speedometer shaft, which drives the speedo unit. The blade-like
drive flange had sheared off and was one of the two loose pieces in the
drive unit.

Problem found. The funny sound was the death of the metal parts
that was transmitted up the speedo cable causing me to misdiagnose the
problem as broken speedo cable.

Twenty years ago, I went through this scenario twice in short
order. The last repair has lasted 40k miles and twenty years. I don't
think that this is a common ZF problem. I suppose that I'll need another
speedo shaft and speedo drive unit and proceed to reassemble. Oh, well.

                   Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

I've never met Chuck (close once, but I ran out of time), but I sure
wouldn't call his daughters or wife dumb and/or awkward.

You have daughters, and a wife--any of them would be optimized for this
task!
